The Winnipeg Jets are based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and are in the NHL's Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The club was founded in 2011, first playing as the Atlanta Thrashers from 1999-2011. The original Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1972, and relocated to Phoenix in 1996 to become the Phoenix Coyotes. The next year, in 1997, Atlanta was awarded an expansion team, the Atlanta Thrashers.

The Thrashers never really experienced any highlights during their time. The only bright moment was in the 2006-2007 season when the Thrashers clinched a playoff spot. The excitement was short-lived as they were shutout 0-4 by the New York Rangers.

The group that owned the Thrashers claim loss in excess of $130 million over a six year span. Because of the financial problems, management woes and the cities inability to support the team, the team was sold to Canadian group True North Sports and Entertainment. The company moved the team to Winnipeg, remaned them the Jets and prepared for the 2011-2012 season.
