The NY Red Bulls have now been part of Major League Soccer for 17 years and has been part of top-flight of American soccer for 16 consecutive seasons. The former MetroStars changed the their teams name in 2006 when they were purchased by the Austrian company that makes the energy drink Red Bull. Originally, the organization was known as the Empire Soccer Club.
The Red Bulls barely made the playoffs in 2011, grabbing the final spot and bowed out in the quarterfinals by losing to eventual champion Los Angeles. The Galaxy won the MLS Cup, the top prize in pro soccer in the United States.
Prior to the 2011 MLS season, New York Red Bulls Head Coach Hans Backe declared that the club's goal for the season was to win the Shield, claiming that it was more of a test for the league title rather than the MLS Cup, which he called a "crapshoot". The Red Bulls are looking to finish again in the top 5 spots in the Eastern Conference and grab a playoff spot. New York is one of the teams in the league that have yet to win the title, but came close in 2008 finishing runner up.
The season is wrapping up in 2012 and New York has jumped to No. 2 in the MLS Power Rankings behind only San Jose. Kenny Cooper and French striker Thierry Henry are among the league leaders in goals scored. Henry, who turned 35 last month, is also in the elite group of assist leaders in the MLS. The playoffs are right around the corner and the Red Bulls will once again have the opportunity to make some noise.
