The Calgary Flames are based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and are in the NHL's Northwest Division of the Western Conference. The club was founded in 1972, playing first as the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980. The organization took the name Calgary Flames in 1980. The Flames are the third professional ice hockey team to represent the city of Calgary, after the Calgary Tigers and the Calgary Cowboys. The Flames share the Calgary representation with the Edmonton Oilers.

The franchise has won one Stanley Cup, three Conference Championships, two Presidents' Trophies and five Division Championships.

Last year's team started out the season falling down to 14th place. they managed to climb back into contention, but failed to make the playoffs. The Flames have not qualified for the playoffs the last two years. Previously, the team lost in the Conference Quarter Finals three consecutive years.

The 2011 Heritage Classic was played in Calgary. It was only the second time the event was held, seven years after the first Heritage Classic. The event features the Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames. The Flames prevailed 4-0 in front of over 41,000 spectators.
