On 11/15/2004, the Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals after Major League Baseball owners voted 28 to 1 to move the team to Washington D.C. The decision upset the Baltimore Orioles organization as the Orioles administration felt that the Nationals team would be too close to their team in proximity.
This was not the first pro baseball team in DC. The Senators played in the capitol city until 1960. That franchise moved to Minnesota.
On 4/4/2005, the first player to bat for the new team was Brad Wilkerson. Wilkerson was the last member of the Expos roster when the team moved. He had a hit in his first at bat as a Nationals player.
The current Washington squad has found a new home in Nationals Park. The new facility was finished in 2008 at a cost of around $611 million. Seating capacity is 41,487 but the record attendance was 44,685 on 8/20/11. That record will fall in the 2012 playoffs.
The teams nickname is the Nats. A name that represented old franchises in the city prior to 2005. The teams uniform colors are red, navy and white.
In 2011, the Nationals finished 80-81, the best season since their franchised changed cities.
In 2012, the Nats qualified for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history with one of the best records in the MLB. Washington D.C. had not hosted a playoff game in almost 80 years. The Nationals baseball club is one of two franchises that have not made it to the Series. The Seattle Mariners is the other franchise that has yet to make an appearance in the World Series.
