The 2011 D.C. United season is the club's 17th year of existence, as well as their 16th season in Major League Soccer, and their 16th consecutive season in the top-flight of American soccer. D.C. United will be trying to salvage a poor showing last season, finishing at the bottom of the MLS standings.

During the offseason, the club made announced that Ben Olsen would assume full head coaching duties, under a three-year contract for an undisclosed price. Olsen, became the first head coach in franchise history to both coach and play on the squad. Previously, Olsen took the role as a caretaker manager subsequent to Curt Onalfo's sacking in August 2010; where the finished the campaign out on a 2-2-4 record.

Before the regular season began, United defended its Carolina Challenge Cup title by recording a 2-0-1 record in the pre-season competition.

The club's first match of the regular season was on March 19, when United hosted the Columbus Crew, and earned a 3-1 victory. The regular season concludes on October 22 against Sporting Kansas City.

In addition to MLS, United will be participating in the qualification rounds of the 2011 U.S. Open Cup. In their last Open Cup campaign, United made a deep run in the tournament, before falling to Columbus Crew in the semifinals.

Most significantly, May began with news breaking that United's Designated Player, Branko Bošković suffered from a torn ACL in their Open Cup loss to New England, hindering the United's midfield. Though the news circulated that his injury was in April, on May 1, the club reveled that his torn knee ligament was more significant than expected. As of yet, no time frame has been revealed when Boskovic could make it back to playing, but it was expected that he wouldn't be match fit well until the summer transfer window
