The New York Rangers are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The Rangers, who joined the NHL in 1926, are one of the oldest teams in the NHL. They are part of the group of teams referred to as the Original Six, along with the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, and Chicago Blackhawks. The Rangers were the first NHL team in the United States to win the Stanley Cup, and they have done it four times.
In 2011, the Rangers waived Wade Redden and brought in more players to get balanced scoring. The Rangers defeated the New Jersey Devils on the last day of the season to finish with 93 points. To advance to the playoffs, they would need the Carolina Hurricanes to lose their last game of the season. Carolina lost its final game to Tampa Bay 6-2, advancing the Rangers in the playoffs. The Rangers would go on to face the Washington Capitals in the first round of the playoffs. After blowing a 3-0 third period lead in game 4 with Washington ahead in the best of seven series 2-1, the Rangers would go on to lose the series in 5 games. It was the second time in three years that the Capitals had defeated the Rangers and kept them from the playoffs.
On July 2, 2011, Brad Richards, a free agent who had played with the Dallas Stars during the prior season, signed a nine-year, $60 million contract to play for the Rangers. In September, Ryan Callahan was named the 26th Captain in New York Rangers history. He is the 5th youngest captain in team history.
