"Win one for the Gipper" was the famous line from part of the halftime speech Knute Rockne supposedly gave to his subpar 4 and 2 team during a game against undefeated Army in 1928. Fact or fiction the score at the end of the game had the Fighting Irish ahead. Rockne, the most famous coach in the history of Notre Dame football is the number one all-time winningest coach in college with a record of 105-12-5. His winning percentage was a whopping .881. Rockne won 6 National titles from 1918-1930. Tragically, Rockne died in an airplane crash in March of 1931.

The program though did survive and lives on today. 3rd year Head Coach Brian Kelly is a legend in his own right compiling a record of 118-35-2 in 13 years at Division II Grand Valley State. Kelly won 2 National Championships and his Lakers helped him win Division II Coach of the Year twice. Kelly went on to be three time Coach of the Year in the Big East, finishing 34-6 while coaching the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Kelly's Fighting Irish finished with another 8 and 5 record in 2011 but failed to win the Champs Sports Bowl by a mere 4 points to Florida State. Coach Kelly has promoted Chuck Martin to Coordinator to boost the spread offense. The last National title may have been in 1988 with Lou Holtz at the helm, but Kelly is a proven commodity and his teams will soon electrify Notre Dame Stadium. The stadium holds 80,795 fans and with teams like Michigan and Stanford visiting this year all the seats will sell out. 

The program that produced 11 National Championships and 7 Heisman Trophy winners may have struggled for several years but it is about to be resurrected.

A National championship may not be in this year's future but Notre Dame is looking to regain some of the glory from days past.
