Pro Basketball originated in Dallas in the form of the Chaparrals in 1967 as part of the ABA. Then in 1979 Donald J. Carter paid $12 million to the NBA to enter the league. Carter became the Dallas Mavericks founder and first GM and the team opened play in the 1980-1981 season. That season the Mavericks struggled as an expansion team finishing 15-67, while playing in their posh new Reunion Arena. After struggling a few years, Dallas found some success in the mid '80s. The Mavs then were boasting a roster that included Mark Aguirre, Sam Perkins, Rolando Blackman, Roy Tarpley, Brad Davis, Derek Harper, and Detlef Schrempf. The height of their success in the decade came when they lost in 7 games to the Los Angeles Lakers in the '87-'88 season in the Western Conference Championship. The 1990's brought mostly struggles, but there was some brief bright spots in the mid - 90's. At that time Dallas had the Triple J's in the form of Jimmy Jackson, Jamal Mashburn, and Jason Kidd. The 2000's opened with the Mavericks breaking in their new home, the American Airlines Center where they play in 2010 and begun a decade long run of consecutive 50 win seasons. The decade began and ended with current Dallas great Dirk Nowitzki. Steve Nash and Michael Finley have been replaced by the likes of Shawn Marion, Caron Butler and Jason Kidd has returned to the Mavericks. With Jason Terry, Brendan Haywood, and Tim Thomas adding to the current roster in 2010, the Mavs have a solid core of players. Current owner Mark Cuban now feels good about his team's potential to dethrone Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference.
