The Falcons are members of the NFC South Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football League. Founded in 1965, they have three division championships since the 1980s.

When the team burst out into the sport in the 1960s, the Falcons were awarded first pick in the NFL Expansion draft. They played their first season in 1966 and their first game on August 1st. In January of 2008, the Falcons named the former Patriots director of college football scouting Thomas Dimitroff to the position of General Manager. Dimitroff went on to lead the Falcons to the playoffs for the first time since 2004, and they finished the season with a record of 11-5.
